On Wordlar

lizardI thought it would be prudent to explain  what the origin for “Wordlar” was. I have always been fascinated by the history of our language, and Old English in particular. At the time that I began to write this blog, I had just finished a class on the history of the English language, and decided to apply the information gained to the title.  In the class, I found it intriguing to learn that “word” was an OE word that had remained unchanged since before the Norman invasions. I just loved that such a basic part of our language was a direct representation of the soul of our language. I’ve always found a sense of mystery in OE, and the Celtic culture, and I wanted a part of that in my Blog.

Since I have set my heart on becoming a master storyteller of the modern world, I searched through databases of OE words, looking for one that might infuse a druidic meaning into my work, when I came across “wordlar”. The suffix translates to “teacher” and at the time, I thought that it referred to words as teachers. Delighted at the idea of a language that would make the distinction of choosing a single word to describe the idea that language is the ultimate teacher, I chose wordlar for the name of my blog.

I have since discovered that wordlar translates more accurately to “verbal teaching”(See Source). While it isn’t as glamorous as I first thought it to be, The spirit in which I chose it continues to fuel my own efforts, as well as the blog to which it gave its name.  For my own purposes, Wordlar will continue to transmit my love of this language to others, and to help share my own ideas as well.
